The Medical Schools Council is working with leading medical schools across England to offer a series of free summer schools. They started in 2019 and will be running the fourth summer school in July 2022. This summer school has been funded by Health Education England, through the MSC and the University of Exeter Medical School. It is aimed at young people from areas of England where few students apply to study medicine.
At an MSC Summer School students can learn about becoming a doctor or health care professional and whether it would be the right career for them. They will receive the information, skills and above all the confidence they need to submit a strong application to medicine. We will be running the residential as a real time medical scenario, with the pupils taking the lead on making diagnostic decisions and working to a deadline to build a field hospital and use a range of medical diagnostic tools and procedures.

Applications for the 2022 Year 11 Summer School are now open. Round 2 applications close on the 7th May
The summer school will run from the 12 July to the 15th July 2022, and is free for all participants, and includes accommodation and meals during your stay.

Once you have made your application we will contact your teacher for references and score your application.
This can take about a month to complete.
We will inform you if you have been successful or not and keep you updated with the progress of your application.
All pupils who are selected to attend will be notified by email.

If you are travelling by train please book at return ticket for Tiverton Parkway Train Station.
We will be providing a mini-bus shuttle service from the station to West Buckland. Buses will leave at:
11:00; 11:30; 12:00 and 12:30.
Our mini-bus drivers will be waiting to pick you up and will have a list of names and arrival times.

Clothing:
• You need to pack clothes sufficient for 4 days
• You do not need to bring your school uniform
• As part of the residential you will be learning about first aid and medical team working so you should bring clothes that are comfortable and in which you can move in freely
• You do not need to have smart clothes for meals, but you can bring them if you wish
• We recommend comfortable shoes; no flip-flops or high heels
• It would be sensible to bring Jumpers/ Sweatshirts, T–shirts and while we suggest you bring trousers to wear. You could also pack shorts and dresses for the evening
• Socks / Underwear and Sleeping clothes
• There will be an option to play a selection of sports in the evenings: please bring trainers/sports shoes and a t-shirt and shorts/ tracksuit trousers / or sports leggings

What did last years participants think of the summer school?
This is a challenging programme with opportunities to work with students from a range of schools in a variety of different ways. There will be opportunities to work with surgeons, crisis managers, doctors and lab specialists. You will be taught in lectures, small groups and need to work together to solve problems with multiple solutions. We think you will find parts of the 4 days challenging and hard work. But the students who participated in the summer school last year found it to be a life changing experience.
It was completely amazing, I'd love to come back- this is honestly one of the best things I've ever done
- it was really inspiring
so useful and helped me to gain an insight into the world of medicine, and applying to medical school
